How to let go of old thought patterns.
Our thoughts actually have little power.
So why do we find ourselves in states of overthinking, over analysing, and struggling to let go and move on?
Thoughts are energy we give our emotions to connect meaning to circumstance.
Human beings are the only animal on the planet that create meaning through thought.
Other animals or plants do not.
The plant analogy.

Plants need light to survive. A plant cannot choose the environment it grows in. This is why you will see a plant grow optimally in perfect conditions. However, if a plant grows in a sub-optimal environment, in more shade, it will not grow to its potential.
The plant does not have a thought about if there is light or not, whereas humans can create the (metaphoric) light.
This is good news because having the ability to create light doesn’t mean we rely solely on the right circumstances.
It’s the thoughts we create to attach meaning to the circumstance.
When we create meaning behind something, we decide if it will give us light or darkness.

Moving on with thoughts and emotions.
We are not our thoughts, they are merely a perception, separate from what actually is.
When we realise we are not our thoughts and that our thoughts are energy we give our emotions, we can step out of the overwhelm, and into the centre of what we are.
Adopting the ability of how to move on and let go requires you to allow the impermanence of emotion to run through you.

We have lost the ability to centre our awareness on the route emotions of our being. And over time (and evolution), we have succumbed to the unconscious way of being by allowing thoughts to manifest and accumulate almost uncontrollably.
Attaching thoughts to emotion builds energy behind the meaning you give it.
If you have a habit of running with your thoughts and allowing them to manifest, you are likely to experience anxiety, fear, depression, worry, and emotions and senses alike.
This further detaches our state of being from the original emotion of the circumstance which arose in the first place.
This unwillingly creates the experience over and over again and can feel overwhelming and daunting. You may even feel like you can’t face the situation in order to move on from it.
Who you identify as.
Being able to move on from a situation has a lot to do with who and what you identify as.
Stripping back to a basic example, where you might feel like you’re unmotivated.
This might be feeling unmotivated at work, in the gym, with your hobbies, or anything else in your life.
We would usually express ‘I’m not motivated’. Which is the thought that we lack reason and momentum to do something.
But if we flip this on its head and instead of expressing the thought that you are not motivated, and say ‘I don’t have the motivation’, you’re immediately disassociating with the ‘unmotivated’ identity and the emotion you feel along with whom you believe you are.
Who we think we are is a compounding of our thoughts.
Being aware of how this impacts our physiology, mindset, and habits is crucial in being able to take responsibility and move on and let go of the limiting mindset we have subconsciously adopted.
What you repeat, you become.
Starting to implement alternative thinking strategies in a positive and constructive way will uplift your consciousness and create outcomes you have control over.
Strategies to let go of old thought patterns.
Below you will learn a few simple but effective strategies to help you step out of reactive mode and into a conscious state of creation.
Step 1
Focus within the body rather than the mind.
This will release the energy behind the thoughts.
Simply allow the energy of the emotion to move through you.
Step 2
Practice being with difficult emotions without reacting to them.
Eventually, this will reprogramme your mind to be less susceptible to unconscious reactivity and conditioning.
The Meditation Guy is a great resource for learning more about the power of the mind and how to overcome unwanted or unconscious thoughts and thought patterns.
Step 3
Change your physiology.
When you become aware, and notice yourself in a thought cycle, change your immediate physiology by moving, getting a drink of water, going for a walk, playing uplifting music, standing out in nature, or doing breath work.
Changing your physiology will change your state of mind. As Tony Robbins would say, motion creates emotion. So push yourself into a state where you move out of a slump of thoughts and into a movement of creativity and clarity.
Step 4
Become aware.
Start to draw awareness to the emotions, situations, people, etc that cause you to feel triggered.
Notice what thoughts you are having and if they serve you.
Feel what emotion these triggers cause you to have and refer to steps 1, 2 and 3 to help you move through the situation.
Letting go and moving on is a process.
If you haven’t consistently implemented mindful strategies like these into your life, it may feel uncomfortable at first, and at some points, you may feel like you’re not making progress.
But being persistent and trusting yourself and the process is vital to allow yourself to move on from old thought patterns and behaviours.
