How I Take Psychedelics

Here, I will give only a ritual I use when I take psychedelics. This is for educational purposes only. I do not promote drug use and always recommend doing your own research before any immersion.

In my eyes, psychedelics are a powerful plant medicine that can open your awareness, consciousness, and receptivity like nothing else on the planet, and each time I decide to go on a ‘trip’, I am enlightened to new thought processes, gain new perspectives, and cherish each journey and what it presents.

With that being said, it’s important to prepare your mind and body for the psychedelic journey to optimise the benefits you will experience. Below are the practices I implement when I decide to enlist plant medicine as my guide.

So let’s begin.

Firstly, I make sure I am in a place of full trust in the plant. It always knows and gives you what you need. I implement the practices below which help me fully surrender to the psychedelic journey.

I make sure I remember what I’m ready for, I will receive. If I resist, it will persist. And to go with the motions and the journey will be a lot smoother.

Before the psychedelic trip.

Meditation.

Meditating before an immersion centres me and connects my mind and body. It brings space for a channel to receive. Meditation brings a sense of peace to my body and calm to my mind.

The ability to centre yourself during the process can come in handy too.

Journaling.

Journaling is useful as it brings to the surface anything on my mind. It allows for the space and energy of the plant to go in the direction where my energy is focused. I simply journal on things I want to release, how I’d like to feel during the experience or how I’d like to live my life as my higher self after the psychedelic experience.

Fast.

This is probably the most fundamental part prior to taking the medicine. Fasting, from my experience clears the pathway for an effective trip. Drinking only limited water for a minimum of 4 hours before ingestion reduces the chances of nausea. Some guides and ceremonial groups will recommend fasting for up to 24 hours before a psychedelic journey.

Set the scene.

The setting of any psychedelic trip is crucial for an effective experience. I make sure I create a safe space where I feel most comfortable. Each time is different for me and the setting I create depends on my mood, my mindset and what I feel I want to work through and gain from the experience. A typical setting may be in a living room or bedroom with dimmed lighting, music dedicated for the journey, incense, a comfortable place to sit or lie and a guide to be there through the experience with you.

During the trip.

This is the simpler part.

I let the medicine guide me.

I go with the flow and allow movement and emotions to move me through the experience.

I do not try and control anything.

I usually have a journal handy to record anything I don’t want to forget or any ideologies that are powerful.

Music can play a big part in the psychedelic trip. I make sure I have a playlist of music ready that can take me and move me through a good space of energy.

All different sensations and emotions arise but the most important thing to remember is to not resist. All will pass. You will feel yourself flow into the peak of your trip and then flow down from it too.

After the trip.

I allow time to process the information, ideologies, visuals, spiritual connections, and whatever else I experienced during the trip.

I find it important that I don’t try and figure things out too much after a psychedelic trip because this causes resistance. I always receive meaning when I simply keep surrendering in the days and months that follow a psychedelic journey.

Psychedelic integration is probably the most important part for long-lasting positive results. My goal is always to maintain the thought openings that have occurred and integrate practices into my life where I will continue to flourish and improve on my quality of my life journey to journey.

Journaling has been pivotal for me and I always make sure when I have something that comes up for me, I write about it. It may just be a few words that come to mind, an image, poetry or it could be a complete passage of emotions from deep within. Journaling has been a practice of release and meaning for me throughout most of my life and I would always recommend it as a method of pre- and post-trip preparation and integration.

So there you have my non-exhaustive list of practices I implement before and after I take psychedelics as well as in my daily life which I feel keeps me in an optimised mindset and allows me to remain in an awareness I did not have prior to my first psychedelic experience.
